The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
ASTM:
- Is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1898.
- The world leader in developing and publishing standards more than 32,000 members.
- 131 standards-writing committees and more than 2000 subcommittees.
- Standards are developed on a voluntary consensus basis.
- Committees must be balanced between producers, users, consumers, and general interest voters.
- The word “standard” covers six categories:
- Test Methods – prescribe way to make measurements
- Specifications – requirements to be met
- Practices – procedures for performing a particular task
- Guides – offer an approach to achieve a goal
- Classifications – provide categories for objects or concepts
- Terminology – creates a common language.
- A Provisional Standard is produced in response to an emergency situation (req’s only subcommittee approval). It can stay provisional for 2 years. It is used the same as a full standard.
- Standards become mandatory when: they are cited in a contract, referenced by a governing agency (i.e. code body), and when referenced in manufacturer instructions or job documents.
- 87% of ASTM funds come from sale of its publications. Please do not make copies for distribution of sale of any ASTM publications.
The following list contains some of the ASTM standards frequently referenced in the EIFS industry.
