MD-EIFS Optional Primer Application and Proper Sealant Installation

This video demonstrates the proper preparation of the base coat to receive finish coat.

  1. The first step is to grind the base coat as needed with a tool such as a Durarasp or other griding tool to obtain a smooth uniform surface for the finish coat.
  2. Optional Primer:  If it is in the building specifications, then apply the specified primer. The video describes the benefits of using a primer.
  3. The system is almost ready for the Finish Coat.  However, the sealants are to be applied to the base coat; thus, the next step is to apply a continuous closed cell backer rod to proper depth at all isolation joints.
  4. Then mask surfaces (prior to installing properly configured sealants).
  5. You are now ready to apply an approved sealant into the isolation joint; see section on sealants for more details. A couple of points to remember including the following:
    • While sealant is still fresh, properly tool the sealant to ensure that it is well adhered to the EIFS base coat and window frame or other dissimilar material.  Tooling also ensures that there are no gaps in the sealant.
    • The tooling will also help to create the desired hour-glass shape.
