spec-i-fi-ca-tion (spes á-fi-ka shan) n. Abbr. spec.

  1. The act of specifying.
  2. A detailed, exact statement of particulars, especially a statement prescribing materials, dimensions, and quality of work for something to be built, installed, or manufactured.

 

CSI
The Construction Specifications Institute Alexandria, VA 800-689-2900

CSI developed the MANUAL OF PRACTICE, which is a guide to preparing specification documents. This general format is used widely for EIFS construction specification documents.

CSI also has a SPEC-DATA sheet format which is a copyrighted publication. Manufacturer’s products or systems would send their information to Architects First Choice in Atlanta (800-395-1988) to have their information published and listed in this special format

 

AIA
American Institute of Architects Washington, DC 800-424-5080

AIA developed the MASTER SPEC System. This information is available in a computerized form or hard copy format. It contains manufacturer data in a format that is used by architects or spec writers when creating construction specification documents.

 

Specification work is organized into Divisions:
CSI MASTERFORMAT and MASTERSPEC use the same 16 Divisions (and 400+ subsections)
