Borescopes

Borescopes can be great tools for Exterior Wall Cladding Inspectors

There are numerous borescopes available today with various features that can impact what you can reach through a hole and the quality of the images and the price of the unit.  Borescopes can range in price from around $20.00 to several thousand dollars.  They can be tools to confirm the damage you identified with your probing without large destructive testing.

  • Typically, you will perform your normal inspection.  You will then know where you have identified problem areas.
    • The borescope should not be used as a screening tool.
    • Rather you will want to have a reason to look inside a wall at a specific location.
  • The wall construction may cause challenges for the use of the borescope.
    • If the wall is insulated it may limit what you can observe with a borescope.
    • If the wall framing does not create any cavities this limit what you can observe with a borescope.
  • We recommend starting with a low-cost borescope and seeing how much you actually use it and does it supply the quality of images you need.  Then up grade if you find the borescope has become an integral part of your inspection.

A borescope is another tool to have with you that can prove to be useful in certain conditions; however, it is not a primary screening tool.
